Holy Crap!!!

Literally!!!!!!!

So I wasn't planing on potty training Logan until after the baby is born because I'm terrified of it. I'm terrified of regression after a new baby, I'm terrified of screwing up and scarring my kid for life, I'm terrified of getting frustrated with Logan when he doesn't get it right away. But yet again, my little man has surprised me and made life easier.

A few weeks ago, Logan had terrible diaper rash, so we let him run around the house naked to let him air out. He ended up peeing on the kitchen floor...no big deal. So I gave him some toilet paper, had him clean it up, flushed it, and washed his hands. A few minutes later, he asked for more toilet paper. I gave him two squares. He went back into the kitchen, peed, and cleaned it up. This went on for a half an hour. Clearly, he knew he had to pee and was anticipating it. So I thought maybe we should invest in a toddler potty so when he was ready, I would be prepared. The next day we found one at Wal-Mart for $16. We brought it home and didn't think much of it for a few days, until one day I decided to put it together. Logan was so interested in what I was doing, so I told him all about the little potty and how it was just for him the way mommy and daddy have the big potty. And when he was ready to stop using diapers, we would let him try it out. Right after that talk, he started pulling on his diaper. I asked him if he wanted to try, he said "uh-huh," and we gave it a shot. I took off his diaper and sat him on the potty.

And he went.

We cheered and did a potty dance and were really excited. So this has been happening for the last three weeks. He will try and tug his diaper off until I finally help him, he sits on the potty, goes, and we get really excited. I've let it go slowly for a few reasons: 1.) I haven't read anything on potty training yet. I just assumed he was too young. 2.) I don't quite trust him and I want to avoid as many accidents as possible. 3.) He was only interested in peeing, not pooing.

Until tonight.

He wanted to use the potty so the routine went as usual. He sat, he peed, we cheered. Then he got back on and POOED!!!!!!! I was astonished!!!! So even though I feel we still have a ways to go before we get him out of diapers completely ...especially through the night... he has accomplished what I thought to be an impossible feat. Yay Logan!!!!

And now that I have posted about our potty training miracle, I'm sure we will have a set-back. But I'm ok with that...like I said, I wasn't planning on starting for another 4 months at least!!!!

The night is actually the easiest part. We put Kaden in Pull ups at night until he just started naturally staying dry. It didn't take very long at all. Occasionally he will have an accident in the early morning if we gave him a drink right before bed but usually he is fine. You can get waterproof pads that cover a whole crib mattress (so most of a twin mattress too) and go over the sheet- it's about 10 bucks for one but that means you just have to change that and not a whole sheet in the middle of the night.

My one recommendation would be to not drag it out too long. I dragged it out with Kaden and kind of missed the boat on when he was excited and interested to do it. Finally I just cut out the diapers completely (pull-ups just for naps and bedtime) and he progressed much faster after that. He needed the consistency to finally give up the convenience of Diapers. My sister-in-law used an e-book that said that any kid can learn starting at 22 months and in just 3 days. And they do learn the basics that quick- there are still occasional accidents but they get the whole process.
